A Spring Walk in the Park

The Patriarch, Arrow and I went for a lovely walk in the park on Saturday.  We hadn’t really been out for a good long walk all winter.  Too cold and rainy to be enjoyable.  And the rain, well in reality it doesn’t rain hard here.  But it drizzles… a lot.  The skies may be gray, but that doesn’t mean it is raining like you may think of it raining in the Midwest.  Or the south.  Or the northeast.  No, here it drizzles and drizzles and drizzles with periodic interludes of downpours, wind and the odd bit of lightening & thunder.

When we lived in Florida, many long years ago now, it would thunder and lightening EVERY time it rained.  Now that we have been here for over 20 years, thunder and lightening is so rare is surprises us when it does happen.

But Saturday… ah, it was a great day for a walk in the park!  High was 55 degrees and there was a spring chill in the air.  The various trees were in their respective buddings.  Some were already in flower and some the leaf buds were only just starting to peak out of the branches.

Spring Pools by Robert Frost
These pools that, though in forests, still reflect
The total sky almost without defect,
And like the flowers beside them, chill and shiver,
Will like the flowers beside them soon be gone,
And yet not out by any brook or river,
But up by roots to bring dark foliage on.
The trees that have it in their pent-up buds
To darken nature and be summer woods —
Let them think twice before they use their powers
To blot out and drink up and sweep away
These flowery waters and these watery flowers
From snow that melted only yesterday.

Spring is my all-time favorite season.  I love to watch the buds emerging on the trees. The early spring flowers are such a cheerful, welcome site after the long, wet & dreary winter.

Flower God, God Of The Spring by Robert Louis Stevenson
FLOWER god, god of the spring, beautiful, bountiful,
Cold-dyed shield in the sky, lover of versicles,
Here I wander in April
Cold, grey-headed; and still to my
Heart, Spring comes with a bound, Spring the deliverer,
Spring, song-leader in woods, chorally resonant;
Spring, flower-planter in meadows,
Child-conductor in willowy
Fields deep dotted with bloom, daisies and crocuses:
Here that child from his heart drinks of eternity:
O child, happy are children!
She still smiles on their innocence,
She, dear mother in God, fostering violets,
Fills earth full of her scents, voices and violins:
Thus one cunning in music
Wakes old chords in the memory:
Thus fair earth in the Spring leads her performances.
One more touch of the bow, smell of the virginal
Green – one more, and my bosom
Feels new life with an ecstasy.

Our Lord has written the promise of the resurrection, not in books alone, but in every leaf in spring-time. ~Martin Luther

I love to read poetry aloud. I love using the tone of my voice to try to convey the beauty of words. I love to write poetry also, so I guess I have a big appreciation for how lovely poetry can be. My favorite poem (so far!) is The Lady of Shalott. How beautiful those words are!

      Hello Laura,
The Patriarch and I have spent a quiet afternoon or two reading poetry to each other. We had so much fun! At one point we tried finding funny poems to surprise each other. what a hoot! I do not know the poem you mention. I will have to check it out!

    Filtered sunshine???

Oh yes, definitely filtered sunshine. It’s the one major advantage in photography I have here in the Pacific Northwest… not being “tied” to dawn and dusk. The overcast makes for great landscape picture taking!

The low light conditions do not help when I attempt to do food-ography though… that condition gives me fits!
