Killing Mold with YL Thieves EO, part 3

Killing Mold with YL Thieves EO vs Bleach

Killing Mold with YL Thieves EO vs Bleach

My *Mold Killing* education is now complete.  This is not the education I was expecting as a new widow.  Dealing with grief, yes.  Killing mold, um… no.

Most people have been led to believe the wrong things about killing mold, how to do it, what to use and even if it’s possible. Many who knew of my mold dilemma suggested using bleach.  Nope.  Bleach doesn’t kill mold!

WHAT DOES KILL MOLD ~
YL THIEVES EO & Household Cleaner (HCC)

  • Thieves actually digests mold spores both IN the air and ON surfaces
  • testing has proven the dramatic reduction of mold spores when Thieves EO is diffused
  • mold doesn’t return when YL Thieves EO is diffused regularly and YL Thieves Household Cleaner is used on surfaces in the home
  • is safe to use around pets and children
  • does NOT destroy wiring, nails or other building materials
  • safe to ingest to treat mold exposure.  ONLY the YL brand is recommended to take internally.
  • A research paper presented at a scientific conference at a Texas university showed that YL Thieves eliminated 19 mold species 100% of the time.  The average mold spore removal efficiency for all 34 species encountered was 97.27%.
  • These can be verified at MoldRx4U.com

WHAT DOES NOT KILL MOLD ~
In my research I have discovered that standard mold killing treatments are either not effective, hazardous to my health or both!

BLEACH

  • bleach is no longer recommend to treat mold by OSHA, EPA & others
  • bleach removes mold only from non-porous surfaces
  • cleaning with bleach stirs up the mold spores & puts them in the air causing more health related problems & allergic reactions

CHEMICALS, BIO-CIDES & FUNGICIDES

  • are poisons
  • treat either the surface or the air, not both (mold is IN both)

OZONE

  • banned by CA citing studies that ozone leads to lung damage
  • may oxidize & off-gas harmful contaminants
  • may destroy or damage electrical wiring, nails, and other building materials

UV

  • only treats air, not surfaces
  • no impact on source of mold

REMOVE, REPLACE, TEAR IT OUT or DOWN

  • if the source of moisture is fixed this may be unnecessary
  • does not treat the air
  • is very costly
Dr. Close Mold Killing Protocol
Edward Close, Ph.D., wrote the book “Nature’s Mold Rx: the Non-Toxic Solution to Toxic Mold” which detailed the outstanding success he  has had treating various kinds of mold by diffusing the powerful anti-fungal essential oil blend, Thieves.  The suggestions below are a summary of what has worked for Dr. Close and hundreds of others who have used his protocol.
.
1) Dr. Close recommends getting a mold test done to determine type & level of mold(s) you are dealing with, first.
I choose not to do this step for a number of reasons.  a) the mold on the walls was due to the extra humidity from the bathroom in the winter, b) combined with the fact that we heat with a single source point of heat… at the opposite end of the house, c) the bathroom exhaust fans were not working for a time which contributed to this problem, d) I caught this early… well the stuff on the walls anyway.

TheraPro Diffuser to Kill Mold with YL Thieves EO

TheraPro Diffuser to Kill Mold with YL Thieves EO

2) Diffuse the Thieves for 24 – 48 hours using a diffuser that does not add water to the air.
I diffused AFTER we removed the carpet & padding in the next step.   I used the TheraPro to diffuse my YL Thieves EO.  Diffusing was started at a very slow rate for the first 12 hours because it was just in this one room (I kept the door closed).  Then I decided it would be better to diffuse at full strength and did so for the full 48 hours.  If I had to do it over, I would have diffused full strength from the outset.  Remember, the carpet was cleaned with the YL Thieves HCC, twice, prior to removal.  This did kill the mold in the carpet but not in the padding nor on the sub-floor.  I had also washed the mold areas on the walls with the YL Thieves Household Cleaner and sprayed them down with more Thieves Spray.

3) Remove mold infested items.  Wear protective gear to avoid contact with the mold!!  Diffusing more Thieves at the same time is also a good idea.  If not possible to remove items clean and diffuse to the extend possible.
We removed the carpet & padding and choose not to remove the sub-flooring. As much of the mold *IN* the carpet had been killed prior to removal though it would have been far better to have used some kind of face mask at the minimum when we were removing the carpet & padding.  Lesson learned!  Diffuse FIRST, remove moldy items second while wearing protective gear AND diffusing more Thieves!  I was also able to wash all my clothing with the Thieves Household cleaner too.  Yes, every single stitch of clothing… m-a-n-y washer loads!  That also included all the bedding and all the pillows!!  I was a washing fool for a time.  ;-)
4) Wash all surfaces with Thieves Household Cleaner.
Done and done.  I also choose to seal the sub-floor with Kilz before laying down the new flooring.  It wasn’t possible for me to remove  the sub-floor (particle board) and the mold could have sent it nasty tentacles into the glue that holds the particles together into a board.  The sealant with mold inhibitor gives me that extra layer of protection from the spores.
TheivesAn additional precaution I took for us, we took the Young Living Thieves EO internally immediately after having removed the carpet.  I put 4 – 6 drops in a capsule for each of us, 1 – 2 times a day for a week.  We also drank 1 oz of NingXia Red every morning.  Please be aware that ONLY the YLEOs are safe to ingest!
Changes in my winter set-up:
Since my bedroom is in the northwest corner of the house it gets quite cold in there.  I will need to get a de-humidifier and run more fans in the winter.
.
Getting the furnace fixed is also on my list as this would help get that end of the house warmer quicker (about an hour) than I can get it warm with the pellet stove (sometimes it never happens!).  I would be able to use the pellet stove to maintain the heat at a lower cost than running the furnace.
.
Depending on the temperatures in the winter I will not use the master bathroom for showers.  We’ll see how these other repairs *fix* the problem.
.
The Patriarch had hired a fella to do drywall-in the skylight hole in the family bathroom a few years ago.  He was also supposed to run the exhaust fan out the roof next to where the master bathroom fan exhasuts.  The Patriarch specifically requested he NOT twin the two exhausts together.  What did he do?  Yup, he twined them together and the hose from the family bathroom isn’t run from a high enough point so it sags and fills with condensation.  Arrow would have to go into the attic, lift the hose and the water that filled it would pour out of the exhaust fan area and onto the bathroom floor!  All subsequent times, I’d hold a 5-gallon bucket up against the fan to catch the water.  THAT needs a permanent fix.
.
Did diffusing Thieves and washing things down with the Thieves Household Cleaner work?  Yes!  There was NO mold smell in the least prior to applying the sealant.  I even got down and sniffed at floor level in a few places for added assurance.  There is NO mold smell anywhere in the master bedroom.
.

Killing Mold with YL Thieves EO, part 2

Thieves Kills Mold

Young Living line of Thieves products

Here is the next installment of  Killing Mold with YL Thieves EO.  You can read part 1 here.

The moldy carpet & padding were removed.  The mold smell was… strong.  I hate that smell!  I kept a fan in the window blowing the air out of the room in the hopes that it would keep the mold spores from traipsing through the house.

Can’t you just see the spores with their evil little grins… doing the mamba?  I’m out to get you… I’m out to get you… la la, la la, la la, lala

I also sprayed the sub-floor with Lemongrass EO because it kills the minor percentage of mold that the Thieves doesn’t… though I didn’t have that.  My bedroom smelled strongly of Lemongrass… and mold.  Ick.

Moldy sub-floor as seen from inside doorway and looking north

Mold stained sub-floor as seen from inside doorway and looking north

In the above photo you can see the large stain on the sub-floor, nearly centered in the photo and 1/2 way between the bed and closet.  If you remember from the previous post that the previous owners used to lock one cat in the master bedroom and one in the laundry room when they left for work.  Yeah.  Great.

Oh, and can you see that dark stripe along the bottom of the wall, right behind the bed?  Yeah… dark teal.  This room must have looked like some kind of dark, dank cave with a dark teal wall and dark brown carpeting.  Not my style in the least!

Moldy sub-floor as seen fro bedroom doorway

Mold stained sub-floor as seen from bedroom doorway looking west

You can see in this picture that the areas of mold are in the walkways, not along the wall (to the left) nor under where the bed is (to the right).  At the top of this photo, near the center is the other large stain.  What you can’t see in either photo are the deep scratches in both door frames where the cat would scratch.  Yeah.  Great.

The special TheraPro diffuser arrived on July 27th.  I was blessed with an extra bottle of Thieves EO and a bottle of Thieves HCC too!

therapro-diffuserThe TheraPro diffuser disperses the EO without the addition of water.  Additional water is the last thing I need in there!

Features that make the TheraPro easier to use:

  • has no tubing or glass nebulizer
  • does not need to be filled with water
  • built in timers for on/off, diffusion duration & diffusion strength
  • holds a full 15 ml bottle of EO
  • has to be filled less often

Menopause Help with YLEOs

Orange, Lemon, Lavender, groupCan I talk to you about menopause and menopausal symptoms  for a moment and let you know how the YL essential oils have helped me?  Yes, this will be a woman’s only post for those men who read my blog.  ;-)

Common Menopausal symptoms are: hot flashes, mood swings, night sweats, irregular periods, loss of libido, vaginal dryness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, memory lapses, and a number of others.

I started peri-menopause about 8 years ago and menopause for about 2 – 3 years now.  I stopped having any monthly cycle about a year ago and had only one in each of the 2 preceding years before that.  My hot flashes are fairly short in duration, but will bring beads of sweat upon my brow and upper lip along with a reddening of my face and neck!  My brother calls them “personal summers of topic proportions”… and they ARE. There have also been times when I will have these in my sleep and will be awakened because I am too hot!  I had severe fatigue at the onset of menopause.  So much so that The Patriarch was very concerned about me.  But that was many years before I had even heard of Young Living.

I have also had difficulty with concentration and memory lapses.  Mostly loosing my train of thought in the middle of my sentence or unable to think of the word I want to use.  The mood swings just tend toward being crabby for no apparent reason.  I hate that.  I guess the one good symptom, now that I am a widow, is the lack of libido.

I have tried natural progesterone creams and have found little relief from them.  Not all creams are of the same quality.  One did an OK job at helping with my menopausal symptoms, but I can’t find it anymore!  Then with the need to cycle the application my symptoms would reappear with a vengeance in the times when I wasn’t supposed to use the natural cream.

Progessence PlusI have been using Young Living’s Progessence Plus Serum to balance my hormones and to help with other symptoms.  One tiny drop is all it takes, I don’t need to cycle the application through the month.  Nor do I have to rotate the area of the body I apply this.   That alone is a huge help to my tired, memory-taxed brain.  The lack of hot flashes makes it doubly good!

I also use the Peace & Calming for balancing my emotions.  This makes for a much happier family!  :-)  I apply this topically or diffuse it!  Love the smell.

Cedarwood & Lavender Sleep ComboMy next favorite oils to diffuse are to help me sleep.  I combine Cedarwood and Lavender at a 3 – 1 ratio.  I adore the aroma and this helps with deep sleep.  I’ve been waking up much more refreshed in the mornings when I diffuse this.

YL NingXia Red & Stomach Flu Help

nr_kkHad a really hard day on Saturday…

We went to or friends to celebrate their son’s birthday.  His is the day after The Patriarch’s (which was Sunday)…

and they had a hymn sing…

and I broke down.

I was sobbing so hard I had to leave the room and *run* outside.  I cried so hard the nerves in my back were firing (similar to when you cough so hard they do the same thing)… it was scary hard crying.

I thought I had cried hard before… and that was nothing compared to Saturday.  I cried so hard I gave myself a headache!

So my back is on fire and I’ve got a bad headache from crying… that is hard crying.

I just let it out.  Who wants to keep THAT?

You know how when you’ve cried in the past and when you’re done you have those sob/hiccup things?  Well I cried so hard there was NOTHING left for any of those.  Sorry… clinical analysis of my crying… I’m tired (of course I was also up at 5:30 AM to take Arow fishing) but not d-r-a-i-n-e-d.

Very cleansing. Very healing. Don’t want to keep all that inside! It makes bad weather in your body.

We were planning on visiting a local church (not ours… just can’t handle two days at the same place we celebrated The Patriarch’s birthday last year), and then we have our HOA annual meeting and then Arrow and I are going to pick up the flooring for the master bedroom (Costco has it on sale right now and tomorrow is the last day) and then we might go out to eat.  Mere minutes before we were to walk out the door I started to feel a teensy bad. Then threw up, then had the worst tummy ache I’ve ever had! Including fever and off and on sleeping. My tummy ached so badly it hurt to breath or eat.

All my standard tummy EOs (Di-Gize & Peppermint) were not helping and it’s hard to self treat when you are the one sick!  So, I spent the day on the couch with Arrow off and on and we watched Vision Forum’s Galapagos DVDs.

Today I was able to get on a FB group for EOs and get some recommendations that helped!

NingXia Red! Love that stuff.

And it had been sitting right there the whole time.
Finally, I’m much improved, and the pain is much less. It’s almost bearable in comparison.

Killing Mold with YL Thieves EO & Grief, part 1

thieves_lbI had an opportunity to try out the YL Thieves Household Cleaner in a way I was not expecting… on mold… to kill mold.

A friend had organized the ladies at church to come to my home and help me go through each room, one at a time and clear out the clutter,  re-organize, clean it all up and fix what needed fixing.  That was suppose to happen back in May and June.  I cancelled that as I wasn’t ready to do that.

The grieving person has to deal with things when they are ready to do so.

One of the ideas was also for me to hold a garage sale.  Yeah?  Not.

UM… preparing for a garage sale is a tremendous amount of work with  little money top show for it without some bigger ticket or *popular* items (like baby cloths!).

I was going to say it is too bad I don’t have any of those except that my *baby* is 14!!  Phew.  I guess I haven’t kept everything after all.  :-)

What I did start to do was pack up The Patriarch’s clothing into boxes until I decided what to do with them.

That is when I found… it.

Mold.  On the walls and then I discovered it was in the carpeting too!

Thieves lineSo I borrowed a carpet steamer and added some Thieves Household Cleaner to the water.  It helped the carpet some and I figured that I just hadn’t used enough.  So I steamed it a second time with a LOT more in the water.  That kept the mold smell at bay for a few additional days… but I was starting to smell it again when I walked on the carpeting.

I was able to talk to a builder friend of mine who said I should really get the carpet out of there.  Another builder friend was coming in 2 days to pick up anything I had for a run to the dump.  Can we say moldy carpeting and padding?

So Arrow pulled up all the carpeting and padding from the master bedroom floor.  We both got a face full of mold!  ICK!  I started us on some Thieves internally to ward off any potential problems from inhaling all that mold.

I had the friend making the dump-run look at the sub-flooring.  Thankfully it was not buckling, bubbling, warping, disintegrating or separating.  As he looked at the floor he said that, because the mold was only in the walk way areas, that the previous owners must have shampooed the carpeting and left it too wet.  I know they used to lock one cat in the master bedroom and one in the laundry room when they left for work.  You can see the spots on the master bedroom sub-flooring where the cat peed… more than once.

I don’t like cats.  This just adds additional confirmation.

Stay tuned for My Mold Killing Updates!

dscf71641950 Pontiac Silverstreak-8 Fastback, that is what he bought many long years ago. It was in need of restoration. But the body was in excellent condition and still has no rust after all these years.

The Patriarch was a car guy through and through. When I met him his daily driver was a 1957 BelAir 4-door. He had painted it mustard and custard. I was the only other person he allowed to drive that car. When we were transferred from California to Florida the Chevy was towing a trailer with the 50 Pontiac on it.

This trip from California to Florida was the same one where the state patrol in California pulled me over. No, I wasn’t speeding… he wanted to talk old cars!! He told us up ahead we’d be passing the place where we could see his old car.

dscf7141Yeah… car guys.

Moving every 4 years and living on enlisted pay isn’t conducive to a car restoration project. We kept moving that car. Once in Washington we had to store it for a short time in a storage lot. I can remember the day we went down there with a large can of rustolium and brush painted the entire vehicle in an effort to keep the rust at bay. So nice to know we did. The car still has NO rust on the body.

dscf7161I had picked out the color for the car. Cream, a rich, deep, creamy cream color. I had even found a tin advertisement that had that same car painted in the beautiful cream color I envisioned. I was going to make us all period style clothes to wear when we drove that car. We had plans to take some road trips.

The heart of man plans his way,
but the Lord establishes his steps.

Proverbs 16:9

dscf7163dscf7134Last year The Patriarch said he thought it was time to sell the Pontiac. He’d never gotten to any restoration work on it and our budget didn’t look like it would be anywhere near the level needed for a restoration project. I knew it was a hard decision for him. Both boys, Peter Cotton Tail and Arrow, were looking forward to the day when they could help daddy restore that Pontiac. We never did get it listed for sale… until now. It will be listed in the Pontiac Oakland Club’s newsletter.  Should be starting in August.

dscf7148For Sale: 1950 Pontiac Silverstreak-8 Fastback.  Body complete & no rust, no glass, no engine.  Includes all chrome pieces, hood ornament intact and in great condition.  Even has the original window washer bottle in excellent condition.  Sold as is.  $3500.  Please contact me at eMaeRay (at) comcast (dot) net for more details and additional photos.  Serious inquires only please.

I am so sorry that I can’t keep it for you boys.

Our dreams are shattered.

First we need to understand the difference between fatalism and what is called compatibilism.  Compatibilism is the view that God is absolutely sovereign (as explained above) and yet our choices have real meaning and we are responsible for them.  It is what I believe the Bible teaches, and is often called “Calvinism.”  Fatalism, on the other hand, teaches that no matter what you choose or do, things will turn out the same.  For example, if it is determined that Bill will get an “F” on his test tomorrow, then no mater how hard he studies or how well he knows the material, he will fail.  His choices do not really affect what will happen.

Compatibilism, in contrast to fatalism, says that our choices really do affect the future, and that if different choices had been made, the future would have been different.  On this view, if Bill doesn’t study, he will fail. But if he does study hard, then his studying will be the means that brings about a good grade.  In regards to God’s sovereignty, this means that God does not just ordain the ends (for example, a good grade for Bill) and then say “this will happen no matter what.”  No, God also ordains the means to His planned end (for example, God ordains that Bill will study as the means to the good grade that He decreed). Our decisions are each links in the chain of means ordained by God to bring about His planned ends.  If different decisions had been made, the consequences would have been
different.  But God works to ensure that the means He has ordained will most certainly occur so that none of His purposes can fail. This makes human decisions truly significant and vital.

If God is Sovereign, Why do Anything? By John Piper

My loss is your gain.  Please let all car guys know about this great deal.

YL Rosewood EO and Limited Special Offer

UPDATE BELOW!

At Young Living we are committed to being responsible stewards of the environment and taking great care to preserve and protect our natural resources. These core values are demonstrated by our Seed to Seal philosophy, which promotes sustainable farming and sourcing practices, while enabling us to produce the most potent essential oils in the world.

Occasionally, we learn of resources that are under stress from over-harvesting or industry exploitation. Over the past few years, we have become increasingly concerned about the health and population of Brazilian rosewood trees. These beautiful trees are under tremendous strain due to unscrupulous suppliers that illegally harvest and sell the wood for use in furniture, musical instruments, flooring, and other decorative items. In our efforts to be responsible corporate citizens and to lesson global rosewood demand, we are taking steps to remove or reduce rosewood oil in our oil blends and personal care products.

We will replace rosewood in these products with a new proprietary blend of coriander, furanocoumarin-free bergamot, ylang ylang, and geranium. This unique combination closely matches the distinctive rosewood aroma and offers a similar chemical profile.

Rosewood has a lovely, woody floral scent and is high in linalol, a chemical constituent with antibacterial and antiviral properties. Its fragrance offers empowering and emotionally stabilizing benefits. Great care was taken to formulate the replacement blend with the same characteristics. Coriander was added to the blend because of its uniquely high levels of linalol. In addition, the blend includes furanocoumarin-free bergamot, also high in linalol, and specially distilled to remove photosensitivity properties.

We are confident that the fragrance and function of the reformulated products will be equal or superior to what you have come to expect. The products affected include:

    Acceptance Essential Oil Blend 5ml
    Animal Scents Ointment
    Awaken Essential Oil Blend 15ml
    Bar Soap: Lavender Rosewood
    Believe Essential Oil Blend
    Chivalry Essential Oil Blend

    Sensation Essential Oil Blend 5ml
    Sensation Bath and Shower Gel
    Sensation Hand and Body Lotion
    Sensation Massage Oil
    White Angelica Essential Oil Blend
    Wolfberry Eye Cream

Only the products listed above will be affected by these changes. We do not anticipate a need to reformulate other products but will continue to monitor the health and supply of rosewood and make adjustments if necessary. The reformulation of these products is further evidence of Young Living’s leadership role in the industry as we set the standard for ecologically friendly business practices that enhance and sustain our natural resources.
